What Sustainability Means Here

Sustainability isn’t a side program it’s how we operate. For us, it’s about:

  • Respect for animals through humane handling and trained staff.

  • Efficient, clean operations that reduce energy, water use, and waste.

  • Local supply chains that shorten transport and strengthen Ontario farms.

  • Transparency so customers can see and trust our progress.

How We Cut Our Footprint (Without Cutting Corners)

Energy & Emissions

  • Upgraded highefficiency refrigeration and preventive maintenance to lower electricity demand.

  • LED lighting and smart controls throughout the facility.

  • Route planning for fewer transport kilometres per hog.

  • Exploring onsite renewables and offpeak operations where feasible.

Water Stewardship

  • Lowflow and highpressure nozzles to washreduce volumes.

  • Closedloop/recapture steps where practical and strict sanitation protocols that protect product and waterways.

  • Regular checks to detect leaks fast and keep systems performing at their best.

Ponds with Purpose: Water Treatment & Wildlife

Our water holding ponds do more than treat and settle wastewater, they’ve become part of a small, thriving ecosystem. By keeping these areas clean, and carefully managed, they provide a habitat for birds, insects, and aquatic life that naturally find their way here.

How Ponds Work

  • Treatment & Settlement - Water first goes through onsite screening and removal of solids, then holding ponds allow remaining particles to settle naturally.

  • Biological Cleansing - Aeration supports beneficial bacteria that break down organic material, reducing impact on the environment.

  • Safeguards - Ponds have depth to protect groundwater, regularly monitored for quality, and managed to control odour.

Wildlife at the Ponds

  • Birds – Ducks, geese, and songbirds rest and feed here.

  • Pollinators – Bees, butterflies, and dragonflies thrive in the grasses and native plants around the pond edges.

  • Aquatic Life – Frogs, amphibians, turtles, and microorganisms contribute to natural balance.

  • Predator Balance – Insects and small species form a food chain that keeps the ecosystem healthy.

Our holding ponds are more than infrastructure, they are a reminder that sustainability is about working with nature, not against it. A well managed pond system:

  • Builds biodiversity on and around the property.

  • Encourages natural pest control (dragonflies keep mosquito populations in check).

  • Connects us to the land, showing that every part of our operation can contribute to life beyond our walls.

Where Precision Cuts Meet a Lighter Footprint

Modern responsibility. At Weston Abattoir, we’re proud to be a local processor with deep roots in Ontario agriculture. We believe premium pork should come with premium care for animals, for people, and for the land we all share.

Circular Thinking

What used to be waste can become value. We partner with rendering and local businesses so byproducts are turned into animal feed inputs, pet food ingredients, oils, and other useful materials  keeping nutrients cycling instead of landfilling.

Compliance You Can Count On

Why It Matters

Lower footprint operations aren’t just good for the planet, they’re good for taste, consistency, and trust. Efficient systems reduce costs and errors. Skilled, lowstress handling supports quality. Local relationships mean fresher product and faster feedback.
